US 15/PA 581 Improvement Project - Highlights

US 15 – (Contract 1)
  • Reconstruct US 15 between the Slate Hill Road Interchange and Gettysburg Road with new asphalt pavement.
  • Construct a new interchange at US 15 and Lower Allen Drive (formerly Zimmerman Drive).
  • Replace the bridge over Lower Allen Drive.
  • Extend the box culvert at Cedar Run.
  • Construct two new concrete retaining walls at the Lower Allen Drive interchange.
  • Construct three new sound barriers at and south of the Lower Allen Drive interchange.

US 15 – (Contract 2)

  • Reconstruct US 15 between Gettysburg Road and the Camp Hill Mall (Harvard Avenue) with new asphalt pavement.
  • Permanently close the existing Ramps to Gettysburg Road (SR 2014).
  • Reconstruct the interchange at US 15/PA 581.
  • Replace the bridges over PA 581, Norfolk Southern Rail Road, and Gettysburg Road.

  • Extend a box culvert under Gettysburg Road at US 15.

PA 581 – (Contract 1)

  • Widen Route 581 Eastbound to provide an auxiliary lane between the US 15 and Interstate 83 interchanges.

  • Widen the 17 span viaduct carrying PA 581.

  • Construct one new concrete retaining wall.

PA 581 – (Contract 2)

  • Construct acceleration/deceleration lanes and shoulders west of the 18th Street Overpass (Viaduct) through the US 15/PA 581 interchange.

  • Construct two new concrete retaining walls.

  • Construct two new sound barriers.

  • Extend one box culvert.

Reconstructing Side Roads – (Contract 1)

  • Gettysburg Road

  • Simpson Ferry Road

  • Lower Allen Drive (formerlyZimmerman Drive )

  • Hartzdale Drive

  • Capital City Mall Drive

  • Spangler Road

  • Glenwood Avenue

Reconstructing Side Roads – (Contract 2)

  • Hummel Avenue

  • Gettysburg Road

  • Simpson Ferry Road

Various Improvements – (Contract 1 & 2)

  • Add a left turn lane and temporary ramp from US 15 Northbound to PA 581 WB, and close the existing ramp from US 15 NB to PA 581 WB (Contract 1).

  • Construct permanent ramp from US 15 Northbound to PA 581 Westbound (Contract 2).

  • Construct one new box culvert on the ramp from Zimmerman Drive to Gettysburg Road.

  • Install new storm water drainage facilities.

  • Complete numerous utility relocations.

  • Install new guiderail and concrete barrier.

  • Install new traffic signing.

  • Install new traffic signals.
