I-81 Exit 44 Improvement Project, Cumberland County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation contracted with Hempt Bros., Inc., of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania to make improvements at the Interstate 81 Exit 44 Interchange at a cost of $36,967,275. The contractor reconstructed the existing dual bridges carrying Interstate 81 over Allen Road (Route 465), reconstructed existing ramps, and built a new ramp. The project also included reconstructing and widening Allen Road between Walnut Bottom Road (State Route 3023) and Route 11 (Ritner Highway).

Other roadway improvements took place along Walnut Bottom Road, as well as Ames Drive (T-712), True Temper Drive (T-713), Alexander Spring Road (T-469), East Commerce Avenue (T-410), and Logistics Drive.

The dual spans of I-81 were reconstructed under a multi-staged sequence and allowed for the construction of a new connector ramp for vehicles to travel northbound on I-81 from southbound Allen Road. Since the new connector ramp is completed, vehicles are no longer required to turn left from Allen Road onto the ramp to northbound I-81, but are using the new ramp on the right to merge onto northbound I-81 with an improved acceleration merge lane.

The roadways and bridges were constructed under multi-staged construction in order to minimize the impact to vehicular travel through the work zones .

The contractor began construction in early April 2009. The overall project was completed in the Fall of 2011.
