I-81 Exit 44 Improvement Project - Monthly Project Update

I-81 Northbound (NB) and Southbound (SB)

  • Northbound and southbound traffic is in a temporary traffic pattern to allow for the construction of four new ramps for the I-81 Exit 44 Interchange.  Two lanes of unrestricted traffic are maintained on I-81 NB and SB between 6:00 AM and 7:30 PM, with single lane closures permitted between the hours of 7:30 PM and 6:00 AM.

  • Demolition of the existing bridge and abutments is completed and construction of the remainder of the new bridge structure over Allen Road is continuing.

  • Southbound traffic exiting to Allen Road (PA 465) is travelling on a partially-completed section of the new Off-Ramp.  Construction of the remainder of the new ramp is continuing.

  • Northbound traffic exiting to Allen Road (PA 465) is traveling on a partially-completed section of new Off-Ramp.

  • Vehicular traffic entering southbound I-81 from Allen Road is traveling on a new On-Ramp.

I-81 Bridge over PA 465 (Allen Road)

  • Vehicular traffic is traveling along the new center portion of the bridge structure over Allen Road.  The existing bridge structure has been removed and construction of the new bridge is continuing.

  • New prestressed concrete I-Beams will be set on the southbound side of the bridge structure in mid-July.

PA 465 / PA 3023 (Walnut Bottom Road)

  • Vehicular traffic is in a temporary traffic pattern along the north side of Walnut Bottom Road.  Full-depth reconstruction along the south side is continuing.

  • Temporary traffic signals are in operation at the intersection of Walnut Bottom Road and Allen Road, and will remain in operation during construction.

PA 465 (Allen Road) between Walnut Bottom Road and Alexander Spring Road

  • Northbound and Southbound traffic is traveling on a newly completed segment of Allen Road, between Walnut Bottom Road and Alexander Spring Road.  Construction of the west side of Allen Road is nearing completion.

PA 465 (Allen Road) between Alexander Spring Road and the I-81 Exit 44 Interchange

  • Southbound traffic is traveling on temporary pavement and northbound traffic is traveling on the existing southbound roadway.  Construction is continuing for the new roadway on the east side of Allen Road between Alexander Spring Road and the existing On-Ramp from Allen Road to northbound I-81.

  • The new Off-Ramp from northbound I-81 to Allen Road is open to vehicular traffic.  A temporary traffic signal is in operation at the intersection of the new Off-Ramp, Allen Road and East Commerce Avenue, and will remain in operation during construction.

  • Construction is continuing for the new On-Ramp from southbound Allen Road to northbound I-81.

  • Reconstructed East Commerce Avenue is open to vehicular traffic.

PA 465 (Allen Road) between the Exit 44 Interchange and US 11 (Ritner Highway)

  • The new On-Ramp from Allen Road to southbound I-81 is open to vehicular traffic.

  • Reconstruction along the east and west sides of Allen Road is continuing.  Unrestricted traffic is maintained between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM, and between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM.  Single lane closures are permitted between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM.

  • Logistics Drive, for a distance of approximately 500 feet off of Allen Road, is closed for reconstruction.  A detour is currently in place.

US 11 (Ritner Highway)

  • Vehicular traffic is traveling along the north side of Ritner Highway.  Reconstruction along the south side of Ritner Highway and near the intersection of Ritner Highway and Allen Road is continuing.

PA 465 (Allen Road) between US 11 (Ritner Highway) and Newville Road (PA 641)

  • Construction is nearly completed for the new 470 foot long reinforced concrete retaining wall along the east side of Allen Road, north of the intersection of Allen Road and Ritner Highway.

  • Traffic is in a long-term pattern along new roadway pavement on the east side of Allen Road.  Reconstruction of the west side of Allen Road continuing.
